Themed White Elephant Exchange Ideas

I haven’t really participated in any white elephant gift exchanges in the past few years besides a “goofy” one where everyone gave gag gifts. I wasn’t too into that one, to be honest…I like gift exchanges where people give nice and useful gifts rather than something ironic. Last year someone I worked with told me about one she was in with her friends and it was such a good idea it got me thinking about what themed white elephants would be fun this Christmas. It was really easy to think of a bunch! Plus, I think having participants going along with a theme not only makes it more fun, but it makes it easier for them to think of something to contribute rather than it being a general gift exchange. Here are some cool themes I think would make for not only something cute and memorable but would allow people to end up with gifts they’ll love. I also included some of my favorite gift ideas for each theme.

Beauty products – if you’re doing an exchange with a bunch of ladies, it would be really fun to pick your favorite beauty product to contribute to the exchange. I mean, who doesn’t love trying a new cosmetic anyways? This could help people to find a new favorite or go-to and I love that this theme is specific yet so broad – you could choose anything from perfume to nail polish to chapstick to lipstick!

Favorite books – if you and your friends love to read, this could be the perfect exchange. Bringing your favorite book could allow someone else to fall in love with a story just like you did, and you’ll get a great read out of it, too. You could leave this broad or do a specific genre if you wanted.

What Was Mine | Big Little Lies | The Couple Next Door | Kitchens of the Great Midwest | Desperate | Everybody Rise | Family Pictures | Keep Quiet | Home Front | I’ll Walk Alone

Favorite wine or alcohol – for those who like to indulge in cocktails, what a perfect theme! This is another one that you could make as broad or specific as you want – either leaving it to just adult beverages in general or a certain kind like wine, beer, or liquor. It would be so cute and fun to pair your contribution with a fun drink recipe or cool set of glasses, coasters, or other drinking accessory – especially since there are so many out there!

Coffee or tea – if you’re part of a group that loves to stay well caffeinated (and really, who doesn’t?!), this could be a fun idea. Bringing your favorite brew or flavor of tea along with a fun mug could be the perfect way to warm someone up this winter.

Ornaments – what could be more perfect for Christmas than an ornament exchange? I love collecting new ones from year to year, and I truly believe that you can’t have enough! I love pulling out my ornaments and remembering who gave them to me or where I bought them. An exchange gives someone a fun new keepsake that they will pull out year after year.

There are so many fun themes you could go with for a white elephant exchange with friends and family this year – these are just a few suggestions! Like I said, choosing a theme could make it easier for people to shop and more fun all-around!
