Holiday Gift Guide: Gifts to Beat the Winter Blues

The winter is coming way too quickly. If you’re like me, you hate the snow, cold, and being stuck inside. However, the winter is simply unavoidable in most places – like where I live, in Chicago. Much time will be spent indoors, hiding under blankets from the frosty air and icy sidewalks. While at the beginning of the season I find myself excited to watch holiday movies and relax with popcorn in hand, before long being inside can get…really old. And boring. And even depressing. Cue the winter blues. We all get them, unless we are lucky enough to live in a year-long warm-weather climate. Sometimes, they even take place by the time the holidays roll around. To beat the winter blues, there are an array of gifts that you can give to your loved ones to perk them up a bit. Here are my favorites.

Tropical drink gifts – one of the best things about the summer are all the tropical drinks. From sangria to margaritas, the possibilities are endless! Even if you don’t have a vacation planned, it doesn’t mean you can’t beat the blues with a fruity drink. To gift this to someone, start with a festive cup. In my last post, I linked to this pineapple tumbler, but I cannot resist showing it again! You could also go with a classic Tervis Tumbler in a tropical pattern. Pair those with a yummy margarita mix and some alcohol and you have the perfect gift. I always find good drink mixes and cups at HomeGoods or Marshall’s.

Bright and fun cosmetics – bright cosmetics are a good way to instill the spirit of summer, even when it’s the dead of winter! Start with nail polish. I love Essie’s polishes – this is my all-time favorite shade, perfect for vacation or sunny days! I also love this bright and sunny pink color. Pairing those with a bright colored file is a great idea. Next, how about a lip gloss or shade in a bright hue? How fun is this Lip Glass shade? Or, for something at a good price point and more subtle (but still fun!), tinted chapstick leads the way! If you are looking for something a bit more luxe, how about a florally scented perfume? Nothing says summer like Daisy! Putting together a bag of fun cosmetics is a perfect gift that any girl would love to receive.

Summer reads – there are so many summer books that put me in a vacation-y mood and make me dream of summer, the sun, and the beach. Some of my favorites are anything by Elin Hilderbrand (The Blue Bistro and The Matchmaker are my favorite), anything by Nancy Thayer (recent favorites are The Island House and The Guest Cottage), and Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan. Pair these with a beach towel, beach bag, or even a cute bookmark for an entertaining and perfect gift.

Beach kit – just because the summer and beach days may seem far off doesn’t mean that we can’t prepare for them, right?! For anyone battling the winter blues, the reminder that warmer days are ahead means everything. A beach bag is a great gift, and there are so many options out there. This Ame & Lulu pick is a favorite, and can I say that I am a bit obsessed with this one, since I have a soft spot for donkeys (weird, I know). For something bedazzled, these are cute and at such a good price-point. Clearly, there is the perfect beach bag out there for each individual. It makes the gift more fun to include some goodies inside the bag, too. Everyone can always use a new beach towel. While a bit on the pricey side, these round towels are so trendy and cool. Anything with pom-poms is cute – and that doesn’t exclude this colorful choice. Finally, include some other fun beach items like suntan lotion, and you’ll have the perfect gift!

When the winter blues hit your friends and family, they are lucky enough to have you around with the perfect gifts in mind. Knowing the winter is here, any of these would make the perfect holiday gift! A fully paid for trip to the Caribbean wouldn’t hurt, either 😉
