Vacation Wardrobe Staples

Packing for vacation can be tough – you have limited space, especially if you are just bringing a carry on! I already went through a whole guide to carry on packing, but what about clothes?

For a beach vacation, I’ve found that you can actually get away with just a few staples and still feel like you have a bunch of different outfit options. I didn’t bring much on my recent vacation, but had more than enough to wear. I tend to over pack, so I have been trying to not go too crazy lately.

Here are some of my favorite vacation wardrobe essentials:

Solid scalloped shorts – these shorts provide a preppy look that can be dressed up several different ways. Having them in a solid is great because you can pair them with a plain colored t-shirt or tank or even a patterned blouse.

Maxi Dress – A maxi dress is a perfect vacation outfit. These are comfortable yet seem to look dressy. I also love them for outdoor meals because they protect your legs from bug bites and keep you warm if it gets chilly! I love this Max Studio dress because it’s casual but nice enough to wear to dinner.

Shift Dress – a shift dress is definitely a vacation staple! These are preppy and cute and can be worn from day to night. I love the Lilly ones but I think when you are trying to pack light, a great solid shift dress is the way to go.

Cardigans – I always bring a couple cardigans on vacation. They’re great to wear with a dress at dinner in case it gets chilly and I always wear one on the plane when I travel. I usually just bring solid ones that can be paired with multiple outfits that I’ve packed. The Gap cardigans are usually my go-to!

Solid T-shirts – In case you haven’t noticed, I’m really into the solids for vacation. Solid plain t-shirts can be paired with almost anything. Not to mention – they are comfortable and easy! J. Crew has a great selection of colors and they are super soft.

Tank tops – I also always make sure to bring a couple plain tank tops on vacation for during the day in case it gets super hot.

As far as shoes go – I keep it super simple. I usually bring a pair or two of Jack Rogers, since they are my favorite and are great for during the day or even for dinner. I bring a neutral pair (like white or tan) and then usually my navy blue and white pair. Then, I typically bring a pair of wedges. Lastly, I bring a pair of beach flip flops. For those, I have a great pair of Vineyard Vines sandals that I’ve had forever, or I also love Havianas.

When it comes to swim, I usually don’t bring anything too crazy. I usually bring three different swim suits (am I the only one loving the one piece trend?) and a couple of coverups. I always find great terry cloth shorts to throw on as a cover up from Old Navy and usually pick up a couple tanks there as well. I saw some adorable cover ups at Francesca’s a few weeks ago, too – if you want something a little more dressy! A good romper always makes a cute cover up, too!
