Work Emergency Kit

Every day before I leave for work, I am so scared I am forgetting something. Lunch? Got it. Name badge? It’s in the pocket of my work bag. Coffee? In my hand! Keys? Will grab them on the way out the door. Ventra card? In my coat pocket.

There are so many things we have to remember to bring with us to work every day as a part of our routine. But sometimes, it’s hard to plan for the unexpected that might come up during a day at the office. From coffee spills to a run in your tights, there is a way to easily protect yourself against the annoyances that have the potential to ruin your day: a work emergency kit! Here is what I keep in mine:

Tide-to-go pen: this is something that has come to my aid many times…most notably when I spilled hot sauce on a tan dress no later than 10:00am. Rather than walk around with an embarrassing stain all day, I whipped out my stain remover stick, and the stain was gone a few minutes later!

Extra pair of tights: during the winter, I wear tights at least a few times a week to work. I’ll never forget the time that my nail got caught in my tights and caused a huge hole. I had no choice but to go without in the middle of the winter when my legs were dry and pale. Not to mention I was freezing! So embarrassing. Ever since then, I keep a fresh pair of tights in my work bag…just in case.

Umbrella: Especially if you live somewhere where the weather is inconsistent and unpredictable (here in Chicago, it could be sunny and clear in the morning and snowing and sleeting by the evening commute), it’s always a good idea to keep an umbrella at the bottom of your bag. That way, you are never caught in the rain, ending up soggy with frizzy hair (I love this dog umbrella from Frontgate but for a more compact one, Totes minis are the best!)

Hairbrush: I have hair that can be…hard to control. Especially living somewhere where the wind can be crazy (thus making my hair even harder to control), I always like to have a brush handy just for touchups. That way, if I want to throw my hair up in the middle of the day or just run a brush through it…I can! I just keep a simple Conair mini in my bag.

Listerine Pocketpaks: ever have garlic bread with lunch? Or a salad with onions? I know I have and afterwards, I certainly don’t want to be stuck all day with smelly breath going through meetings, working with my colleagues, and interacting with clients. For that reason, I always keep Listerine strips handy. I prefer them over gum – reason being that since I am constantly interacting with colleagues and clients, I don’t want to be chomping away on a slice of gum. These are a quick and easy way for me not to be self conscious about my breath. If these are too strong for you, mints will also get the job done!

Bandaids: I always keep band aids with me at work. You wouldn’t believe how many people have come around asking, “does anyone have a bandaid!?” and I always am happy to lend them. You never know when you’ll have a blister that needs covering before the walk home, a paper cut, or some other wound that needs a band aid. I always have the travel Band-Aid pack so they’re not just floating around in my bag.

Oil Absorbing Sheets: There is nothing that bothers me more than when I feel like my face gets shiny. Especially when the day is coming to a close, my face tends to start to feel a bit greasy and it makes me so self conscious. I love the Clean & Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets to quickly and easily solve the problem.

Since most of these things are pretty compact, I keep them in a cosmetic case (aside from the umbrella) stored in my desk. That way, I don’t have to constantly tote them around and they’ll always be there even if I end up switching my work bag. I love the Vineyard Vines cosmetic cases because they are super cute and the perfect size!

these are all such great ideas! I also keep travel sized deodorant and eye makeup remover in my desk because you never know and also I’m totally the type of person to rub her eyes forgetting she put on eye makeup that morning!
